A couple of days ago, Year 6 had the Lead Yourself into the Future Conference. At the start of the day we were put into different groups with a colour as the name. We had eight people in our group and ours was called ‘grey’, depressing huh? We had three tasks in which we displayed leadership. The task I’m choosing is the cup challenge.
For the cup challenge, we were given six plastic cups, one piece of string and a few rubber bands. The challenge was to make the highest tower out of the cups without touching them. Our group, after not doing so well in the first task, got together to talk about strategies and ideas. First of all we came up with the idea to stack the cups on top of each other but when we tried it the tower fell down. We tried someone else’s idea and it worked but the tower was very short. Then we discussed as a group what we could do. We ended up coming up with the innovative idea to attach one of the cups to the piece of string that we cut in half, by putting a rubber band around the cup and tying the pieces of string to the rubber band. Then we tied the piece of string to 2 chairs, suspending the cup in the air. Then we took the remaining cups and stacked them the beneath the suspended cup.
I learnt that working in a team is really hard but when you work well you can get a great outcome. Everyone has good ideas. If your idea doesn’t work it doesn’t mean you failed.
You may think that owls are just like any other bird but they are much more than that.
The scops owl is one of the cleverest birds alive.
It has brown and white speckled feathers, large eyes, large talons and pointy tufts of feathers that resemble ears.
It is found in the country side or the woods and feeds mostly on small insects.
To hide from predators they disguise themselves as branches. They stretch there bodies out to look leaner and sway back and forth to appear like a tree branch swaying in the wind. This is an behavioural adaptation.
There pointy tufts are not useless but there use is not for hearing. Tufts are specialised feathers that stand up from there head. Owls use tufts to help camouflage or disguise themselves. They resemble small twigs or branches.
Did you know that owls have 14 neck bones! That’s twice as many as humans! This enables them to turn there head 270o in both directions.
Owls are incredible creatures look at these websites to learn more about owls:

This year, the year 5 production was hanging on the bottom of the world about Australian federation.
My characters were a convict, a miner and an anti-billite. My favourite part was the gold scene where we got to dance to gold! A challenge for me during the production was speaking loud and projecting my voice. A highlight was the fact that Mrs DePaiva was laughing the whole time. A PLA that l used is imagination when imagining that it was all real l also used courage for just getting out there. S
It starts with the ‘brides’ of the six colonies coming together to make Australia but one of the commentators ( eddie ) doesn’t understand why so we go back to the start, 1770 to be exact and see Captain Cook and the First Fleet and the governors of Australia WA, SA, VIC, TAS, NSW and QLD. But suddenly its the gold rush. Miners from all over the world flock to Australia to find gold. The miners decide that we should have a game of cricket to decide whether to federate or not so a cricket game is set up between the pro feds and anti-billites but the Suffragettes interrupt saying that women should have the vote to decide.
Thanks to all the people who helped with the play we couldn’t have made it without you.
have you ever been in a play?
This year we have had some great book chat books, my favourite book was rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell.
It is about sophie a girl who was found floating in a cello case. She is determined to find her mother and makes friends with the rooftoppers a group of kids who live on the roofs of Paris.
I enjoyed this book because it has adventure and a sense of magic even though there is no magic. It had family and friends as well as action.
I would recommend this for year 3s 4s and 5s.
What’s your favourite book?
Christmas in Australia is a lot different to Christmas everywhere else. For example it’s summer, so stuff like cherries are in season and instead of turkey or ham we have cold meats and seafood like prawns.
On Christmas eve I usually go to carols by Candlelight with my friends and on Christmas Day my family all go round to my grandpas house and sing songs, eat Christmas lunch and give/receive presents
How do you celebrate Christmas?
In week two of term 4, 5B went to Camp Toona. The bus ride was long but we stopped Yarragon on the way. When we got there we dragged our bags across the gravel to the tents ( the boys put there bags at Lyall hall. ) Once we were settled in to our tents and had a tour around the camp we split of into two groups to go kayaking and biking. That night we slept in our cabins for the first time.
The next day we visited the water police and learnt about safety on boats and in water, then we played some games like ga ga ball and bang. When it was time to go on the expo we packed up our bags and started to walk to the camp site. When we got there we learnt how to set up our tents. That night we sat around the camp fire and played empires.
After we had packed up the campsite we walked back to Toonallook and got ready to go to Raymond island and go fishing we didn’t catch any fish but we had fun! On the last day everyone got up early to wach the sunrise.
Have you ever been on camp?
This week is the first week of the blogging challenge. We made avatars. My avatar has brownish blonde hair and blue green eyes. It has shoulder length hair and a smallish nose just like me. Its wearing a white shirt and a blue jumper like my school uniform.
What dose your avatar look like?
This is a video of me teaching fractions.
What did you learn this term?
This term in integrated we have been learning about the gold rush. At the start of the unit we started researching our dioramas (mine was the tailor) and wrote a letter to our teacher , pretending we were children from the gold rush.
This term in library we have been evaluating shortlisted information books for the CBCA Book Week Awards. A good information book has 3 component
- good visuals
- good layout
- listing where you got the information from
My favourite book was the happiness box but waves got my highest score.
We also had book week this term I dressed up as eleven from stranger things. Stranger Things is a tv show but there are many books of it and it is based on a book.
Who did you dress up as?
